HIKE OF THE WEEK
“Top of the Y” [GM] [AT]
This hike next to the campus of BYU is a moderate out-and-back (OAB) hike that is 2.2 miles long and has recently been a hike that we have done 3 times. Scott and I are training to do the Rim-2-Rim hike at the Grand Canyon in October and this has been one of our go-to hikes to help train. We have a bunch of other moderate and hard hikes coming up that we plan to do as well, but this is a good one. Make sure to bring plenty of water and start early or go later in the day since there is no shade.
MURAL OF THE WEEK
"Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo Mural” [GM]
"Coke Sign Mural” [GM]
These are two of our favorite murals up in Ogden. There are so many murals to check out that we feel bad just pointing out these two, but these are two great ones to start with. We recommend renting scooters and cruising around the area to find some of the others. It is a great couples activity on scooters but can be fun for the whole family also.
WATER ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK
“Shoot the Tube/Graffiti Rock” [GM]
This is such a fun activity that we first learned about from some neighbors when we had moved here. It is a tunnel that goes under the I-80 that allows Parley's Creek to drain into the pond inside the nature area in Parley's Historic Park. You can bring inner tubes or boogies boards and slide down the tunnel. Careful of the corrugated pipe though on your bare butt if you are trying to do it without something to cushion yourself. It is VERY bumpy!
HISTORICAL/CULTURAL ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK
“Gilgal Sculpture Garden” [GM]
This location is a small urban garden area located near downtown Salt Lake City that features some very interesting and unique sculptures from a particular artist that enjoyed the symbolism behind ancient scripture mixed with geographical sites. A fun place to explore with the kids.
NATURE ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK
“Cross E. Ranch” [GM]
This animal park features some awesome farm and exotic animals that you may or may not have seen before. They also have some awesome donuts that we were not able to try at the time when we went because COVID still had them shut down, but we are excited to go back and check them out. They also had some fun baby animals to see when we went.
CRAFT/ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK
What better way to cool off during these hot summer days than to teach the kids how to make their very own "ice cream in a bag". This can be such a fun and refreshing activity.
DAY TRIP OF THE WEEK
Vernal, UT
For the day trip this week, we headed about 2 hours east to Dinosaur Country to check out the things to do around Vernal, UT.
- “Little Brush Creek Cave” [GM]
Located just off the road along Highway 191, this is a super cool spot where Little Brush Creek has cut under the rock and formed some cool cave formations. It is moderately difficult to hike down the spot next to the road where we parked, but once you are down in the creek bed, it is so awesome to explore this area.
- “Moonshine Arch Trail” [GM] [AT]
This hike is a 1.4mi out-and-back (OAB) easy hike that takes you out to a really awesome arch similar to what you might find in Arches National Park. You can even climb up into a cave-like area behind the arch and take some awesome pictures shooting back under the arch towards the desert landscape.
- “Red Fleet State Park” [GM]
This state park is located along Highway 191 and has some awesome campground areas and some really cool dinosaur trackways to check out dinosaur footprints. You can also bring along the boat, kayaks, stand up paddle boards, or just do some good old fashioned swimming in this beautiful reservoir.
- “Greetings from Dinaland Mural” [GM]
This mural is located near a car wash and is super fun to take pictures in front of with the family as a welcome to the area and to send to all of your friends and family like a postcard.
- “Utah Field House of Natural History” [GM]
This museum not only features some awesome dinosaurs that you can take pictures with in the courtyard area, but also has a LOT of hands on things you can do to see and experience the awesome things that my boys loved: DINOSAURS!!!
- “Pink Dinosaur Welcome to Vernal” [GM]
This awesome pink dinosaur welcomes you to Vernal as you drive into town from the East side. We have had this on our bucket list for years and so happy to have finally crossed it off our list. She is so cute!!!
- “Fantasy Canyon” [GM] [AT]
This area is just south of Vernal by about 45 minutes. It is a 0.5 mile easy loop hike around this area back to your car. It reminded us a lot of what Goblin Valley was like the first time that we went there. So many geological structures and marvels that have been carved out by the wind. This is definitely a once in a lifetime spot to visit with the family and cross off the list.
- “Dinosaur National Monument” [GM]
This National Monument is huge and covers miles and miles along the easter border of Utah and western border of Colorado where dinosaurs roamed long ago and are now visible for us to see and explore.
- “Quarry Exhibit Hall” [GM]
This visitor center at Dinosaur National Monument is located the furthest west and nearest to Vernal. It is also the one that features the largest exhibit of dinosaur bones in one single wall of bony artifacts. So if you have not checked out this area yet, this should DEFINITELY be on your list. ENJOY!
